Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has spoken publicly for the first time since the announcement that he will be leaving Ferrari at the end of the 2020 Formula 1 season.
The German revealed in a press conference ahead of the first race in Austria, his “surprise” that Ferrari offered him no new deal beyond this year.
Vettel said “It was a surprise to me when I got the call from Mattia saying the team did not wish to continue.”
The thought previously had been that there were disagreements over a new deal but he clarified saying “There was no sticking point….no offer was on the table.”
Ferrari have replaced the 53-time grand prix winner with current McLaren driver Carlos Sainz ,who has signed a two-year deal as Charles Leclerc’s teammate from 2021.
Vettel on the other hand, is yet to announce his next move. Whether he will be in an F1 car next year or call time on his great career remains a big question.
Speaking to RTL, he said “I’m not rushing into anything [decision]. The next weeks and months will probably bring some more clarity.”
