Russian tennis superstar Maria Sharapova has announced her retirement from the sport aged 32.
The five-time grand slam champion in an essay for Vogue and Vanity Fair released on Wednesday, bids farewell to her 28-year career.
Sharapova rose to prominence as a 17-year-old when she stunned the world on a run to the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles title in 2004.
She went on to win the four more majors – the U.S. Open in 2006, Australian Open in 2008 and most surprising, twice a French Open Champion in 2012 and 2014.
The former World No.1 became only the sixth woman in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam.
